THE GREATEST RISK YOU CAN TAKE
From MARY LYN MILLER,
Executive Director, The Life & Career Clinic:
What is something that you would
really like to do or experience that you're too afraid to do? Don't think about it too
long. You know what it is; it keeps gnawing at you and not doing it just doesn't make the
desire for it go away.
Could it be:
__ Acting
in a play?
|
__ Visiting
a foreign country?
|
__ Building
a house?
|
__ Writing
a book?
|
__ Starting
a business?
|
__ Rescuing
animals?
|
__ Living
at the beach?
|
__ Speaking
to an audience?
|
__ Doing
good?
|
__ Learning
a language?
|
__ Creating
a piece of art?
|
__ Having a
family?
|
__
Inventing something useful?
|
__ Your
Dream ____________?
|
What is it for you? Maybe this is
the month for you to take a risk to do something new and exciting! If you're feeling
fearful, remember...
Anything Worth Having is Something for
Which You Will Have to
Risk.
The question to think about is not
what will happen if you DO take the risk, but more about how will you feel of you DON'T?
What if you get to the end of your life without pursuing your dreams? Isn't that a lot
riskier than trying until you succeed?
If fear is blocking you, here's a
thought: According to "DO IT" authors, John-Roger and Peter McWilliams,
"the person NOT taking risks feels the same amount of fear as the person who
REGULARLY takes risks. The non-risk taker simply feels the same amount of fear over more
TRIVIAL things." In other words, not doing what you really want to do does not keep
you any more comfortable than if you went for it!
Tips for
Risking:
|

|
Take the time to identify what you really want; don't let your fear
keep you from wanting it.
|

|
Do something small. There's a tendency to
think we have to do big things. Just pick up that 1,000 lb. phone and make an inquiry,
follow up one lead, ask one question, take one class.Just do anything and you will begin
to progress.
|

|
Allow yourself not to be very good. "I
won't do it until I look great at it." Everything has a learning curve. Success comes
from failing over and over again...every successful person will tell you so.
|

|
Find support (check
out our Vision Focus meetings or TeamSpirit programs.) You will risk a little at a
time with less anguish if you have support and feedback.
|
The greatest risk you can take is
not to risk at all. Let September be the month you begin to take small steps to move
toward your dreams!
