There once was a story of a baby elephant who was
bound to a post by a long, heavy chain.
Everyday, the young animal struggled and tugged against the
chain to no avail. No
matter how hard he tried or how much force he used, the chain never
budged and the post remained deeply rooted in the ground.
One day, the small elephant collapsed in exhaustion and
resigned that he would be tied to the post forever. Time passed and
the young elephant grew. Before
long, he was a full grown adult, as tall as a building and as strong
as a thousand men. But,
despite his brute strength, he never strayed from the post nor did he
ever pull against the chain.
One day, some people walked by and marveled at the
sight of the enormous beast ambling in a lazy circle around a small
post. A young girl tugged on her father's shirt and asked,
"Daddy, why doesn't he just walk away? He's so big and strong he
could easily uproot that post and be free."
Her father explained: the elephant cannot move any
further than he believes he can no matter how powerful or capable he
really is.
The poor elephant's brain had been trained to
perceive his possibilities within certain limitations, and, despite
the fact that those limitations no longer existed, he could not
experience anything greater.
