WHAT
YOU FOCUS ON EXPANDS
From Mary Lyn Miller
This simple phrase
explains virtually everything that is going on in your life.
Are you focused
on what you really want? Or are you focused on what you’re afraid
will happen? Or won’t happen. Either
one will expand as you give energy to it. Each one produces a result.
It is your focus that
determines the outcomes in your life. Whatever you are experiencing
in your work, your money, your health, your relationships, is the
result of either your conscious or subconscious focus.
Many of my clients
come to me because they feel they need more “focus.” In fact, they
do have focus. It’s just a focus that is not producing desirable
results in their lives.
For example, one of
my clients is a beautiful, young physician with a husband, child
and ailing mother. With so many things to focus on, she has taken
her medical exams three times with out passing. As she approached
studying for the next exam yet again, she knew she had to do something
differently. She was
scared, overwhelmed and couldn’t sleep. She
came to me for “re-focusing.”
After her Focusing
Evaluation, this is what we discovered:
She was focused on
trying hard and mentally forcing information rather than relaxing
and absorbing it. She never felt she could “stop” studying and
worked at it until bedtime every night. She focused on the fear
of not passing instead of the vision of her succeeding.
Since she was already
feeling inadequate, she focused energy on “proving” to her family
she was a good person by trying even harder to be an exceptional
wife, mother and caretaker at a time when she needed to be focused
on study and relaxation to prepare her for her exams. She needed
to be receiving as much as giving.
She put off “enjoyments” until “after
the exam,” giving her nothing to excite and motivate her now, leaving
her depleted and depressed.
We worked together
to shift her focus to:
 |
Relaxing
more and taking lots of study breaks. |
 |
Creating
a vision of enjoying taking the exam and succeeding. |
 |
Negotiating
tasks with her family and allowing them to contribute to
her success. |
 |
Incorporating
slices of enjoyment allow the way - having short term events
to look forward to. |
Can you see how these
simple alterations in focus can change outcomes? Her exam is at
the end of March. Unlike her past experience, she’s doing beautifully
and is now feeling very positive about the results.
